Cycle to Recycle

recycle

Join the City of Santa Fe Environmental Services and take a tour of the Buckman Road Recycling and Transfer Station (BuRRT)! On May 24th, participants will begin at Bicentennial/Alto Park at 8am and ride bikes together as a group to the BuRRT, following all traffic laws as applicable. Environmental Services will follow the group in a car. Attendees will go on a tour of the recycling facility and then return to the starting point by bike.

Tour: An in-depth tour will include the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) recycling operation and diversion programs at BuRRT. The guided tour by Randall Kippenbrock, Executive Director, Santa Fe Solid Waste Management Agency, will provide an understanding of the entire MRF process that occurs from when the materials arrive to when they leave. The tour will also showcase the diversion programs, including glass bottles, green waste, scrap tires, HHW, e-waste, batteries, mercury bulbs, scrap metal, and white goods containing refrigerant.

  • Accessibility: Not handicap accessible. The tour will include climbing several sets of stairs on the MRF.

  • Environment: The tour can be noisy and dusty. Participants may experience uneven or slippery walking surfaces.

  • Attire: Participants should wear long sleeves and pants. Must wear flat, comfortable, closed-toe shoes.

  • Personal Protective Equipment: The Agency will provide hard hats, safety vests, and safety glasses.

Please be advised: This ride does mingle with traffic and this route is used by City of Santa Fe recycling trucks. Additionally, the route requires intermediate riding abilities due to the steep uphill route. The recycling tour includes climbing stairs for the MRF and observing heavy machinery. Participants can opt out of climbing stairs as needed.  All participants will be required to sign a waiver of liability before participating.
